Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said that Russia has to agree to any decisions on trade restrictions and sanctions against Ukraine with the Eurasian economic commission (EEC).

‘I don’t see any grounds for applying any sanctions against our reliable trade partners – Kazakhstan and Belarus. Moreover, I think that when Kazakhstan and Belarus joined the Customs Union, the issues of applying safeguard measures and sanctions by Russia were to be subject of the regulation of the ECC, as it delegated powers to the commission,’ he said at a press conference on Sept. 26 in Kyiv.

The president said that such decisions undermine the basis of the functioning of the Customs Union.

‘If I say that I’m sad about this, I will digress from the truth, but in my opinion, this proves the inefficiency of this interstate union and its insincerity. When it is needed we have an interstate union, when it is not needed, we apply it ourselves,’ Poroshenko said.

The president thanked Kazakhstan and Belarus for their consistent and solid support of Ukraine, and for their respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
