You're reading: Rada fails to overcome presidential veto on law on legal status of internally displaced persons

The Verkhovna Rada has failed to override the veto of the president of Ukraine on the law on the legal status of persons forced to leave their homes due to the temporary occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol and circumstances related to the anti-terrorist operation on the territory of Ukraine.

According to head of the parliament Oleksandr Turchynov, if MPs are not able to overcome the presidential veto, the law will be recognized rejected.

As reported, the Ukrainian president did not sign the law because it does not foresee mechanisms for providing guarantees and “as a whole has a declarative character.”

The head of state also noted that the definition “forced change of residence,” according to the law, would be applied to individuals who found themselves in these circumstances, no matter where in Ukraine such circumstances are. Consequently, this will cover a wider range of relations but not only those related to the annexation of Crimea and conducting ATO.

The law was passed on June 19. Its authors are Valeriy Patskan (the UDAR faction) and Serhiy Sobolev (the Batkivschyna faction). It defines the legal status of internally displaced persons, economic, social and legal guarantees for such persons.

The document was vetoed on July 17.
