You're reading: Verkhovna Rada appointed new head of National Bank of Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada has approved founder of the Investment Capital Ukraine group of companies Valeriya Gontareva as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

 A total of 349 MPs voted for such a decision on June 19.

Gontareva has headed the board of directors of the Investment Capital Ukraine (ICU) group of companies since December 2007. From January 2001 to December 2007, she served as first deputy CEO and head of financial markets at ING Bank Ukraine. Earlier, for five years, Gontareva worked as a member of the board of Societe Generale Ukraine, where she was responsible for the bank’s work on capital markets. From 1993 to 1996, she served as a leading economist in the Ukrainian Interbank Currency Exchange.

Gontareva has two higher education degrees – the first received at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1987, and the second (a degree in economics) at Kyiv National Economic University in 1997. She speaks Ukrainian, Russian and English.

The NBU head is appointed by the Verkhovna Rada under a motion from the president for a term of seven years.
