The holding of illegitimate elections in certain districts of Luhansk and Donetsk regions will contribute to a further escalation of the situation in the east of the country, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann have said.

According to the press service of the Ukrainian president, at a meeting in Milan on Oct. 17 Poroshenko and Werner Faymann stressed the need for the steady implementation of the Minsk protocol and the Minsk memorandum.”

“They also noted the importance of increasing the number of OSCE mission members to restore control over the Ukrainian-Russian border and provide the mission with unmanned aerial vehicles. During the meeting it was noted that the holding of illegitimate elections in some districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions would cancel the Minsk agreements and contribute to a further escalation of the situation,” reads the report.

While commenting on the results of the meeting, Poroshenko said that he had agreed with the Austrian chancellor to closely coordinate measures to guarantee a peace process and the steady implementation of the Minsk protocol, as well as to guarantee the energy security of Europe and Ukraine.
