You're reading: Pyatt: Parliament election is yet another step in Ukraine’s democratic journey

U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt says that the parliamentary election is "yet another step in Ukraine's democratic journey."

“Today we were privileged to observe Ukrainian democracy in action as the nation went to the polls for the second time this year, this time voting for a new parliament. We congratulate all those at home and around the world who were able to take part and look forward to the assessment of today’s vote by domestic and international observers,” reads a statement by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt and U.S. Ambassador to the OSCE Daniel Baer on the Ukrainian parliamentary elections on Sunday.

Pyatt said that over the course of several hours the Embassy had visited ten polling places throughout Kyiv to see how that historic day had been unfolding. “The election officials, observers and citizens we encountered were eager to discuss election preparations and enthusiastic about their ability to vote, once again, for change. The atmosphere was upbeat and positive,” he said.

The OSCE plans to share a preliminary assessment at a press conference Monday afternoon in Kyiv, the statement said.
