You're reading: Russian law enforcement authorities: Rada deputy status can’t help Savchenko accused of felony

The status of a possible Verkhovna Rada deputy for pilot Nadia Savchenko after last Sunday's election will have no effect on her future, a source in the Russian law enforcement authorities told on Oct. 27.

“Savchenko is accused of a grave felony and her possible election to the Verkhovna Rada cannot help her,” he said.

Earlier reports said that Savchenko headed the candidate list of Yulia Tymoshenko’s Batkivschyna party, which passed the 5 percent threshold in the Verkhovna Rada elections as of Oct. 27 morning.

Tymoshenko expressed hope on Sunday that the election to the Verkhovna Rada would help release Savchenko from custody.
