You're reading: Central Election Commission: Ballot-papers not to be issued in Russian language

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has said that today there is no reason for issuing ballot-papers for the upcoming parliamentary elections in Russian language.

“We didn’t discuss this issue as it’s not on the agenda. The law on
the election of people’s deputies of Ukraine has not been amended and
the ballot-papers are being printed in the state language,” a member of
the CEC, Mykhailo Okhendovsky, told journalists on Monday, Aug.20.

As reported, the law of Ukraine in the principles of the state
language policy that took effect on August 10 significantly expands the
sphere of use of Russian and other minority languages in Ukraine. In
particular, the law stipulates that documents on the presidential,
parliamentary, and local elections, as well as national and local
referendums should be drawn up in the state language. However, the same
documents should be issued in both the state and regional languages in
the regions that introduced a regional language. The same refers to
ballot-papers – they should be printed in the state and regional
languages in such regions.

The parliamentary elections in Ukraine will be held on October 28, 2012.
