You're reading: Gryshchenko: Problems with vote counting in some districts linked to flaws in electoral law

The Ukrainian authorities want to ensure the transparency of the parliamentary elections, while problems in several elections districts arose due to flaws in a new electoral law, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Gryshchenko has said.

“The current situation in several constituencies showed the flaws of the new legislation and its application, which will be analyzed in detail and will be the basis for the further improvement of the electoral system in the country,” the minister said in a statement in connection with international estimates of the calculation of the results of the parliamentary elections in Ukraine.

Hryschenko said the Central Election Commission was closely monitoring the honest counting of votes and, if necessary, is applying to law enforcement agencies.

“We again note that disputes between candidates will continue regarding the results at less than 5% of single-seat districts. The situation in them is currently close to having been resolved. As for the remaining 95% [of constituencies] the results have been determined and they are no cause for dispute,” Gryshchenko said.

The minister added that the current situation in disputed districts in Ukraine was the return to a mixed electoral system, which has not existed in the country for over a decade.

“The restoration of the system of electing half of the constitutional composition of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in single-member districts was supported last year by two-thirds of MPs, including representatives of all opposition factions,” he said.

Gryshchenko noted that the introduction of this legislation has led to difficulties with the formation of election commissions and revealed the existence in the Ukrainian political system of “a highly competitive environment at the level of parties and at the level of individual politicians, with their difficult characters.”

“The Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly noted the importance of holding fair, transparent and democratic elections to the Verkhovna Rada,” the minister said.

He also said that the CEC was closely monitoring the situation in the districts where the election results are still being determined.
