Dnipropetrovsk – Former Ukrainian Prime Minister (1996-1997) Pavlo Lazarenko is to lead the party ticket of the Hromada Party at the upcoming parliamentary elections.
As posting on the party’s Web site reads that on August 4 the party
will hold a congress to discuss its election campaign and approve
candidates for people’s deputies that will run in the party ticket and
in majority constituencies.
The party’s press service said that Lazarenko thinks that the Hromada
Party is a strong political force that has been represented in the
Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament.
As reported, Lazarenko was convicted in the United States of
embezzling funds illegally received and transferring them to foreign
accounts in 1994-1999. A Californian court sentenced Lazarenko to nine
years in prison in August 2006. He remained in his apartment in San
Francisco under house arrest pending the consideration of the appeal
against his conviction.
Lazarenko was Ukraine’s prime minister from June 1996 to June 1997.
