You're reading: Regions Party ‘not afraid of early parliamentary elections’

The Regions Party is ready to participate in early parliamentary elections, the head of the Regions Party faction in parliament, Oleksandr Yefremov, has said.

“If such a question arises, our faction will be ready to participate
in early parliamentary elections,” he said at a briefing on Thursday.

He said that faction members were not afraid of the question of early
parliamentary elections, because “we do not have a constructive
opposition in the format in which the parliament currently works.”

At the same time, Yefremov said that the question of early
parliamentary elections and the dissolution of the Verkhovna Rada was
not being considered at the official level.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said on July 4 that the main
task was to stabilize the work of the Ukrainian parliament, but he did
not rule that if it is impossible to do this, “it will be necessary to
switch to the procedure of early parliamentary elections.”

On the same day, representatives of the united opposition stated
their intention to participate in early parliamentary elections.

According to Article 90 of the Constitution of Ukraine, the president
may terminate the powers of the Verkhovna Rada only if plenary meetings
do not start within 30 days of one regular session.

At the same time, the powers of the Verkhovna Rada cannot be
terminated in the last six months of the term of office of the Ukrainian
president.
