You're reading: Belarus bomber who killed 15 executed

The mother of one of two men whose subway bombing attack in ex-Soviet Belarus killed 15 people and wounded hundreds more says he has been executed.

Lubov Kovaleva told the RIA Novosti news agency she had received official notification about the execution of her son Vladislav.

Kovalev and Dmitry Konovalov, both 26 years old, were convicted in November of planting a bomb at the busiest subway station in Belarus’ capital, Minsk, last April.

Investigators said the men were driven by "hatred for humankind," not political or religious motives. But their defense lawyers claimed the trial produced only inconclusive and trivial evidence.

The nation’s authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko last week denied the men clemency.

Belarus is Europe’s last nation to carry out executions.
