You're reading: Belarus condemns European Parliament resolution

Minsk, May 13 (Interfax) - The European Parliament resolution on Belarus is aimed at destabilizing the economic situation in the country and contradicts international law, sources in Minsk said.

"The authors of this resolution are trying to take advantage of the consequences of the global financial crisis to destabilize the economic situation in the country. Essentially they are calling for measures that are aimed at undermining the stability of Belarusian society and people’s wellbeing," Belarusian Foreign Ministry press officer Andrei Savinykh said commenting on the European Parliament resolution.

"The European Parliament is calling for political and economic pressure on Belarus, which are aimed at inflicting direct damage on our country in violation of all norms of international law," the diplomat said.

Savinykh believes that "the European Parliament is reproducing and forcing on everyone distorted interpretations of the events taking place in Belarus."

Savinykh confirmed that Belarus "will have to take measures in response" if economic measures are taken by the EU. "These measures will be appropriate measures targeted at persons and structures actively generating anti-Belarus actions," the diplomat said.

In the meantime, the diplomat said Belarus is ready to resume constructive dialogue.
