BRUSSELS - The European Union is calling on the Russian authorities to ensure a fair trial of members of the Pussy Riot feminist punk band.

The EU urges Russia to honor its international obligations concerning
the people’s right to a fair trial, which all citizens should have, a
spokesman for High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and
Security Policy Catherine Ashton told Interfax.

The EU is closely following the hearings on the Pussy Riot case and
is concerned about pressure that defense lawyers, witnesses and
journalists involved in the hearings are apparently experiencing, he
said.

The EU is worried by reports on irregularities related to this case,
which have been coming since the moment the band members were detained
in March, particularly those concerning grounds for their detention, the
conditions in which they are being held, and the way their trial is
proceeding, he said.
