MINSK - Belarus' government is working to organize a visit to the country for Pope Benedict XVI, President Alexander Lukashenko said on April 10.

"I don’t think it will be long before the pope is able to come to Belarus and meet with his followers. We will be glad to see him. We must work to that end with our patriarch as well. We are doing such work," Lukashenko said during a meeting in Minsk with the apostolic nuncio [Vatican ambassador] to Belarus, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti.

"I think we would be able to evolve good guidelines and carry through good events that would help strengthen not only the Catholic community but the entire flock – the Orthodox, Catholics and others – in Belarus," the president said.
