You're reading: Patriarch Kirill calls for open dialogue on Transdniestria

Chisinau - Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill said he believes the Transdniestria issue can be resolved.

“I am deeply convinced that, despite the current problems, the faith of the people of Moldova, the faith of the multi-ethnic people of Transdniestria, the Church that links the two banks of the Dniester – all these things are factors that can also help political solutions to the difficult problem that we inherited from the past,” the patriarch told reporters at the Chisinau airport at the end of his three days visit to Moldova.

Patriarch Kirill said this problem is connected to the collapse of the Soviet Union, “a huge geopolitical event.”

“It is surprising that there are so few conflicts. There could have been more conflicts, but God has saved us from many conflicts,” he said.

The patriarch said he is convinced that “open, sincere dialogue that takes into account various viewpoints can become a real mechanism, including for the solution of the Transdniestria problem,” and wished the people and church of Moldova peace and prosperity.
