Tbilisi - Over 50% of Georgia's residents expect improvements in Georgian-Russian relations following the new Georgian cabinet's taking office.
According to a poll conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Georgia, 52% of the respondents believe that Georgian-Russian relations will improve after the October 1 parliamentary elections in Georgia.
Thirty-four percent of the respondents believe Georgian-Russian relations will improve “to a certain degree,” IRI said in a report released on Thursday.
Five percent of the respondents do not expect any improvements, 1% are skeptical, and eight percent of the respondents were undecided.
Eighty-three percent of the respondents said dialogue with Russia should continue and 11% believe it should continue “only to a certain degree.” Two percent of the respondents spoke against the negotiations, 2% were definitely against the negotiations, and 2% were undecided.
Responding to a question about Georgia’s membership on NATO, 65% of the respondents said they fully support Georgia’s accession to NATO and 17% said they support it to a certain degree.
Four percent of the respondents said they oppose Georgia’s membership of NATO to a certain degree, 5% said they are definitely against it, and 9% declined to answer the question.
The poll was conducted on the territory of Georgia on November 9-21. It surveyed 1,500 respondents who are old enough to vote.
