The Russian GLONASS navigation satellite system will have achieve global coverage by the end of this year, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov told a Wednesday press conference dedicated to GLONASS prospects.

"GLONASS will turn global by the end of this year. We are completing the formation of our satellite cluster, and GLONASS will become a worldwide network," he said.

There will be 24 operating satellites in the GLONASS constellation, Ivanov said. The group will have 30 satellites by 2011-2012, Ivanov said.
