You're reading: Snowden’s lawyers call on Norway to explain why Oslo plans to extradite Snowden to US

Lawyers for former CIA employee Edward Snowden, are planning to demand through a court the explanations about the grounds, based on which Norway is ready to extradite Snowden to the U.S., and protect the right of the besieged U.S. citizen to have freedom of travel.

A group of European lawyers for Snowden, and this is a consolidated stance of mine, the Russian lawyer and the U.S. lawyers, has lodged a lawsuit with a Norwegian court bringing claims against the Norwegian state, seeking to receive a clear answer: On what kind of grounds do they intend to extradite him to the U.S.?” lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told Interfax. Kucherena is a lawyer for Snowden.

According to Kucherena, Snowden’s lawyers have received a letter from the Norwegian Ministry of Justice, warning that if Snowden enters the country to receive his Pen Center award, he will be extradited to the U.S.

“Meanwhile, we have no knowledge by now of what the specific charges against Snowden are. Here in Russia, no one has received any extradition request from the U.S. where we could read about the elements of crimes, of which he has been accused of, and also what measures could be applied against him in the event of an extradition,” Kucherena said.

To date, Snowden has only faced accusations of a political nature, “which is a gross infringement of his rights and freedoms, including his right to freedom of travel”, Kucherena said.
