You're reading: Syria events could negatively affect Iran situation – Lavrov

Moscow is concerned that the way the situation is developing in Syria could negatively affect the events surrounding Iran, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"I share your concerns and concerns of some of your interviewees that Syria could be the beginning of very bad events," Lavrov said in an analytical TV program hosted by Sergei Brilyov on Saturday.
"If the interethnic and inter-religious structure of the sophisticatedly constructed Syrian state, which has known not a few dramatic events in its history, is damaged, consequences could be unpredictable. It is an obvious fact that the current structure has failed. Unfortunately, a brewing crisis inside the Islamic world between the Sunnis and the Shiites could burst in this very point. If the current structure collapses, the situation could change not only around Iran but also around and inside Iraq, where the Sunnis feel abused. And they are saying openly about this," Lavrov said.
