You're reading: Twelve illegal immigrants from Ukraine and Uzbekistan injured in fire in St. Petersburg

A large fire broke out in the Vyborgsky district of St. Petersburg, which burned to the ground makeshift barracks, which served as home to illegal immigrants from Uzbekistan and Ukraine, the press center of the Russian Interior Ministry told Interfax-Ukrainy on Friday.

“Twenty derelict wooden cabins on Vyborg highway near the house No. 216, which were squatted by citizens of Uzbekistan and Ukrainy have burned down,” the press center said.

As a result of the fire, which engulfed an area of 300 square meters, twelve people were injured. Four citizens of Uzbekistan and two Ukrainians were hospitalized. Five more Uzbeks and one Ukrainian were rendered assistance on site.

The causes of fire are being established, the police are probing the circumstances of illegal immigrants living in the derelict barracks.
