Moscow - A unit of Russian Northern Fleet warships and support vessels led by the anti-submarine ship Severomorsk has passed the narrowest part of the English Channel, the Strait of Dover, and has entered the Bay of the Seine, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

“Due to unfavorable weather conditions expected in the near future on the route of the unit’s passage, a decision has been made to wait out a storm on an anchorage in neutral waters of the Bay of the Seine,” the Northern Fleet said in a statement shared with Interfax-AVN on Friday, Nov. 28.

While passing through the North Sea, the navigation and radar engineering groups of the Severomorsk and the anti-submarine ship Alexander Otrakovsky and also the navigators and radar operators of the Dubna tanker and the SB-406 rescue towboat practiced “the passage of narrow waters in complicated weather conditions with intensive navigation.”

During the anchorage, the ships’ crews will practice the neutralization of underwater sabotage forces, train vessel damage control amid water intake and fire, and conduct maintenance checks.

The naval unit left Severomorsk on Nov. 20. Since then, the ships have covered over 1,700 miles, passing part of the distance in stormy conditions.

The unit is cruising under the flag of Northern Fleet’s Kola All-Arms Forces Flotilla Deputy Commander Cap. 1st Rank Alexander Peshkov.
