Ukraine's Ambassador to the United Kingdom Volodymyr Khandohiy has expressed his concern over instances of Ukrainian athletes being deprived of medals due to controversial judging at the 2012 Olympics in London.

“I was not surprised with the incidents with our athletes at the
Olympics. Athletes from Ukraine have always been subject to more intense
scrutiny than others. To win in any sport, Ukrainian athletes, as well
as athletes from all former Soviet republics, need to be head and
shoulders above their rivals so that no one could have even the
slightest doubt that they are the best,” the diplomat said in an
exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

Khandohiy dwelt on the case of Ukrainian boxer Yevhen Khytrov, who, in his words, fell victim to unfair refereeing.

The delegation of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine responded
very quickly, they filed relevant appeals, which unfortunately were not
satisfied, the diplomat said.

According to the Khandohiy, in general, the atmosphere in London is
very festive, unusual and patriotic. “The British take the Olympics to
heart and are actively rooting for their athletes. British flags are
hanging everywhere in the city. The festive atmosphere always makes a
great impression. Therefore, London has never been more welcoming,” the
ambassador said.
