President of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine Oleksandr Volkov has been elected into the Board of the European International Basketball Federation (FIBA) at the General Assembly of FIBA Europe in Munich.

“Oleksandr Volkov received the votes of 46 [people] out of 50
possible,” the press service of the Basketball Federation of Ukraine
reported on May 17.

Head of Turkish Basketball Federation Turgay Demirel became the new
President of FIBA Europe for a term of office from 2014 to 2018.

As reported, Volkov managed to persuade leadership of FIBA Europe not
to take 2015 European Basketball Tournament among men’s national teams
away from Ukraine, and postpone a decision on the tournament’s future
until the first half of June 2014.

“Volkov suggested waiting for the new FIBA board to be elected,
waiting for the results of Ukraine’s presidential elections, and after
this analyzing the stage of tournament preparation, security issues,
development of the internal political and the economic situation in
Ukraine, and then making a decision,” Director of the EuroBasket 2015
tournament Markiyan Lubkivsky told Interfax-Ukraine news agency.
