You're reading: Three Ukrainian clubs to compete in European tournaments this season

Two Ukrainian squads – Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk – are set to play in this season’s Champions League, the European continent’s most prestigious tournament for soccer clubs.

The last time the two Ukrainian rivals played in the Champions League together was in in the 2012-2013 season.

Shakhtar made it as far as the Round of 16 then, while Dynamo didn’t advance past the group stage.

This season, Ukraine league defending champions Dynamo are in Group G facing Chelsea, Porto and Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Its first match is at home on Sept. 16 versus Portuguese club Porto.

Shakhtar drew Group A and will face Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, and Malmö. It plays Real Madrid in Spain on Sept. 15 for its first group-stage fixture.

Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk will compete in the lower sister tournament, Europa
League, as last year’s runner-up team.

It faces S.S. Lazio visiting from Rome on Sept. 17. Also in Group G of the Europa League are France’s Saint-Etienne and Norway’s Rosenborg.
