About 18,000 police officers will maintain public order in Ukraine on Independence Day, including 4,000 law enforcers in Kyiv, according to Anatoliy Lazarev, the chief of the Interior Ministry's main staff.

"About 18,000 law enforcers are to be involved in maintaining public order, including up to 4,000 police officers and Interior Ministry troops in Kyiv," he said at a press conference in Kyiv on Friday.

Lazarev noted that according to initial reports, about a million people would attend about 1,600 events in over 900 cities, towns and villages in Ukraine on Independence Day.

Ukraine will mark the 20th anniversary of its independence on August 24.
