The rector of Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas Yevstakhiy Kryzhanovsky is sure that the development of liquidated wells in Ukraine will allow to increase gas production by 5-6 billion cubic meters (bcm) per year, oil - by 1.5-2 million tonnes per year.

During the parliamentary hearing on June 16 Kryzhanovsky said that “Ukraine has over 8,000 liquidated wells with a level of performance of slightly over 30%. It is expedient to re-use them in view of new technologies”.

He added that liquidated wells are also environmentally dangerous, however their development will reduce these risks.

Yaroslav Kuntsiak, the professor of the same university, added that reaching this production level at the liquidated wells is possible within five years. He stressed that investment would be much lower than that for ultra-deep drilling or offshore development.

At the same time, Kuntsiak offered beneficial taxation for the development of such wells by drilling sidetracks at a rate of 2%. He added that there is little time to make a decision, as most of these wells were drilled in the 1970-s.
