You're reading: Ambassador: EU has no consensus on what to do with Ukraine

There is no consensus in the European Union on how relations with Ukraine should develop, said Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany, Pavlo Klimkin, who heads the Ukrainian delegation in the talks on signing of the Association Agreement with the EU.

“The EU does not know what to do with Ukraine. It did not know what to do with Ukraine a few years ago, it does not know what to do with us now, and it still will not know for a certain period,” the diplomat said this at a plenary session of the National Convention of Ukraine on the EU in Kyiv on Thursday.

He said this situation was due to the difficulties in finding political consensus within the EU. According to Klimkin, the problem is not only about the geographical position of Ukraine, geopolitics, and the size of the country, but also about the internal situation in the EU.

“We will live in a situation in which the EU will not know what to do with Ukraine for some time,” the Ukrainian diplomat added.

He said the EU is currently undergoing transformation, the current crisis will not substantially affect the union and “after a while we will have a significantly different EU.”

Analyzing the current state of cooperation with the European Union, Klimkin expressed the hope that the Association Agreement would be signed soon. He noted there has been substantial progress in the dialog on the simplification of visa regime with the EU.
