You're reading: Amnesty International: Tymoshenko, Lutsenko, Ivaschenko being tortured by hunger

The Amnesty International global movement has said it has no information about the torture of former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko, former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and former Acting Defense Minister Valeriy Ivaschenko, but the law enforcers stressed that sometimes the detainees have to go without food and water all day at court hearings.

"No, we don’t have information that they are being tortured," researcher on Ukraine at Amnesty International Heather McGill said at a press conference in Kyiv on October 12.

At the same time, the researcher noted that the accused are usually brought very early to court and they go without food during the all-day court hearings.

"The detainees are usually brought to court in the early hours of morning, for example, at 6 a.m. During the whole day in court they don’t eat or even drink. Very often they return to their detention facilities after supper, so sometimes they go without food all day. This can be considered as cruel treatment," she said.
