The opposition plans to demand that the decision to schedule elections in Kyiv for June 2, 2013 be made at a meeting of the parliament's conciliatory council on April 1.

“The opposition’s main demand next week is the adoption of a resolution on the elections in Kyiv,” Batkivschyna faction leader Arseniy Yatseniuk said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He said “a decision was taken in parliament to delay the adoption of this resolution.” Yatseniuk said that he had received a letter from the chairman of the parliamentary committee on local government that the committee will collect only by March 28 proposals from MPs on a draft resolution on the election in Kyiv, which was adopted at first reading last week.

“Therefore, we’re appealing to the people of Kyiv – opposition parties will hold a protest rally on April 2, demanding the elections of Kyiv mayor and Kyiv City Council and the resignation of President [Viktor] Yanukovych’s protégé, [Head of Kyiv City State Administration] Oleksandr Popov,” Yatseniuk said.

The first deputy leader of the Batkivschyna Party, Oleksandr Turchynov, in turn, said that the opposition calls on residents of Kyiv to come to the building of the Verkhovna Rada on April 2 at 1000.

He also noted that three opposition parties had reached fundamental agreements on the nomination of a single candidate for city mayor, as well as on the nomination of candidates for single-mandate constituencies in Kyiv, however, it is currently premature to talk about concrete agreements, because the elections have yet to be scheduled.
