You're reading: Canada adds Kadyrov, Bortnikov, Fradkov, Nurgaliyev to expanded sanction list

Washington - Canada on Wednesday added the names of 19 more citizens of Russia and Ukraine to the list of persons to whom sanctions apply, the website of the Canadian government indicates.

The new names on the list are head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov, head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov, Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Bortnikov and Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council Rashid Nurgaliyev.

Sanctions were also imposed against State Duma deputy Mikhail Degtyaryov, Security Council member Boris Gryzlov, FSB Deputy Director Vladimir Kulishov, head of the 5th department of FSB Sergei Beseda, Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev, presidential assistant Dmitry Shchyogolev, Krasnodar territory governor Alexander Tkachyov, high-ranking officer of the Main Intelligence Department (GRU) Valery Travkin, businessmen Konstantin Malofeyev and Nikolai Shamalov.

The Canadian sanctions also apply to Interior Minister of Crimea Sergei Abisov, the people’s governor of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic Pavel Gubarev and his wife Yekaterina Gubareva who poses as the DPR foreign minister.

These individuals will be banned entry to Canada and their assets in that country, if any, will be frozen.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that the sanctions introduced in coordination with the U.S. and Europe will further increase pressure on those who are responsible for the crisis in Ukraine.
