Problems could arise during the organization of local elections in Kyiv due to the absence of the district chain of election commissions, Deputy Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Andriy Mahera has said.

"I hope that deputies will make changes to the law and fix this situation. But if the elections are held in summer, I’m not sure that parliament will make such changes before the elections, so that we don’t have a conflict in terms of holding the elections in Kyiv," he told journalists in Kyiv on Monday.

Mahera noted that in accordance with the law on local elections, in Kyiv, following the removal of district councils, it is planned to create only a two-level system of electoral commissions – one Kyiv city commission and over a thousand local commissions.

"The question is whether the city commission will manage to deal with a thousand local commissions? In my understanding of the question, it will fail to do that. It’s necessary to create an intermediary chain – district election commissions, but the law, unfortunately, does not foresee that," he said.

He also noted that he considered it more expedient to hold local elections in Kyiv simultaneously with parliamentary elections, which will help save budget funds for the financing of local election commissions.
