Pechersky District Court in Kyiv has drawn the attention of the state penitentiary service to the fact that former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko is not receiving proper medical care in jail.

The court approved a relevant motion by the ex-minister’s lawyers.

After the court meeting, Lutsenko’s defense counsel, Ihor Fomin, told reporters that he was surprised by this ruling of the court, as it is a just a response to the ex-minister’s emotional statement during the trial.

The lawyer said that Lutsenko and his defense team have no complaints about the detention center where the defendant is kept.

Nevertheless, Fomin said he hoped that Lutsenko would receive a proper treatment, and not only medical examinations.

However, the defendant can receive a proper treatment only after being released, the lawyer said.

Earlier during the court sitting, Lutsenko said: "I am absolutely convinced that I will leave the prison not for health reasons, but because of my innocence. Legally, I will win the case, but I should have the physical ability to do this… I’m not asking for anything impossible, give me a doctor, do what you want, just treat me. They are not treating me, just examining and asking how I feel. If not, then let’s stop these talks, and come what may."

The hearing of Lutsenko’s case will continue at 09.15 on Sept 21.
