You're reading: Court continues hearings of Lutsenko case

The Pechersky District Court of Kyiv is continuing on Tuesday its consideration of a criminal case opened against former Ukrainian Interior Minister and People's Self-Defense Party leader Yuriy Lutsenko.

An Interfax-Ukraine reporter said that Lutsenko was present at the court hearing, according to the Self-Defense Party’s official website and news agencies reports.

Only journalists from the print and electronic media were allowed into the courtroom, because at its previous session, the court banned the photographing and video recording of the trial until a verdict is announced.

The court explained its decision by the fact that witnesses would be questioned and that the materials of the criminal case contained secret information The press service of the People’s Self-Defense Party reported that on Tuesday, prosecutors continued reading out the indictment, which runs to 340 pages.

At the last court session, the prosecutors read out about 60 pages of the indictment.

Lutsenko and his driver Leonid Prystupliuk were charged with the misappropriation of Hr 360,000 in state property and fraud on Dec. 13, 2010.

The former interior minister, who is currently being held in a detention facility, was detained near his home on Dec. 26, 2010.

On Dec. 27, a court ordered his arrest on the grounds that he had been dodging questioning in violation of his written pledge not to leave Kyiv. The state prosecutor’s office charged ex-interior minister with abuse of office, saying he had embezzled state funds.

Lutsenko has denied any wrongdoing and dismissed the charges as politically motivated.
