DNIPROPETROVSK – Babushkinsky District Police Office in Dnipropetrovsk has opened a criminal case on a gunpowder explosion in a tram on Monday, as a result of which eight people were injured.
The head of the main department of the Interior Ministry of Ukraine in Dnipropetrovsk region, Viktor Babenko, said that the case was opened under Part 1 of Article 267 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (infringement of the rules for the transportation of explosive substances that could cause death or other serious consequences).
According to Babenko, the incident happened due to negligence of an unemployed resident of Tokmak (Zaporizhia region), Vadym Aranzhy, who was born in 1978, who was transporting two containers of gunpowder of 200 grams each and around 500 hunting cartridges, which are a part of hunting equipment.
Babenko added that the police checked all permits on buying of gunpowder, as well as bills from the shop, where Aranzhy bought the gunpowder. Babenko stressed that Aranzhy had all necessary permits for buying gunpowder and hunting cartridges.
"He bought them officially," Babenko said.
He also noted that gunpowder was packed in its original packaging. At the same time, Aranzhy had transported the gunpowder and hunting cartridges unsafely.
According to Aranzhy, the handles of the bag with dangerous items broke and the containers with gunpowder dropped on the floor of the tram. The gunpowder ignited and went out immediately.
As reported, an outbreak of fire and smoke occurred on the tram going along a central boulevard in Dnipropetrovsk on Monday at 1345.
