The defense ministers of Ukraine and the U.S., Stepan Poltorak and Ashton Carter have signed the concept of the development of the partnership between the Defense Ministry of Ukraine and the Defense Department of the United States for five years.

The signing of the document took place in London on Sept. 8, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s press service reported.

“This document is aimed at the support of Ukraine’s defense reform and will provide an opportunity to implement the program of bilateral cooperation, transfer of military equipment, material and technical resources, provision of services and training of personnel,” Poltorak said adding that the Ukrainian defense ministry signed a document on cooperation for such a long period for the first time.

This is a new page in the history of Ukrainian-American relations, and the two countries will be writing it together, said Carter for his part.

According to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, the document foresees four main areas for cooperation: strengthening the defense capability of Ukraine, the implementation of the defense reform with the aim of creating modern armed forces, the improvement of defense planning processes based on the capabilities and defense resource management in order to create, prepare, develop and support the army. Another focus is the improvement of cooperation in the sector of defense technologies and to support the integration of the defense sector.
