Art patron, entrepreneur and descendant of the legendary dynasty Michel Terestchenko has won the mayoral election in the town of Hlukhiv, Sumy region, with two thirds of the vote, MP Hanna Hopko has reported.

In early hours of Monday she posted on Facebook that according to preliminary results of the count at 18 polling stations in Hlukhiv, “Terestchenko confidently, is leading with 44,414 votes, while his closest competitor Yuriy Burlaka received 13,027.”

Michel Terestchenko was born in France but has lived in Ukraine for over ten years.

Mykhailo Tereschenko (1888-1956) was one of the first Ukrainian industrial magnates who earned his fortune by producing sugar. Teretschenko’s family has spent up to 80% of its income on charity and the development of local infrastructure.

On March 23, 2015 Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko presented a Ukrainian passport to Michel Terestchenko.
