You're reading: Duda says Polish-Ukrainian relations should not be overshadowed by 20th century events

Polish President Andrzej Duda has spoken of the importance of a truthful presentation of the historical events relating to Ukraine.

“The injustice that was happening in the 20th century should not overshadow our relationship but needs to be talked about. The relations must rely on the truth,” Duda told a press conference held jointly with Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko in Kyiv on Dec. 15.

“I also mentioned the desire of Polish Catholic communities, concerning the return of their churches. We talked about it with Mr. President [Poroshenko] and he had certain constructive proposals on cooperation as part of a joint committee,” Duda said.

Hopefully, the parties will soon reach positivity on these matters, the Polish president said.

Duda and Poroshenko also agreed to step up the discussion by a joint consultative committee of issues relating to the shared history.

“An important issue at the meeting was that we discussed significant intensification of the efforts of the presidents’ consultative committee. We would like this committee to meet after the New Year and start working,” Duda said after talks with Poroshenko on Dec. 15.

For his part, the Ukrainian president said that the committee will be discussing issues relating to the shared history.

“We have agreed that the consultative committee will maintain this dialogue, and in this respect we actively welcome the cooperation between the Ukrainian and Polish institutes of national remembrance,” Poroshenko said.
