You're reading: ECHR starts hearing case on Lutsenko’s complaint against his unlawful arrest

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Tuesday started hearing a case on the alleged unlawful arrest and detention of former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko, the press service of the People's Self-Defense Party has reported.

According to the press service, the court hearing began at 1000 Kyiv time.

"The ‘Lutsenko vs. Ukraine’ case concerns a well-known politician’s complaint that his arrest and the decision on his detention were arbitrary and unlawful, and that he was not informed about the reasons for his arrest," the party’s press service said, citing a statement by the ECHR.

The hearing is being conducted in open mode, but the discussion of the case will be closed.

Lawyers Ihor Fomin and Valentyna Telychenko are to represent Lutsenko’s interests in court.

As reported, Lutsenko was detained near his home on December 26, 2010. On December, 27 Pechersky District Court in Kyiv ordered his arrest due to the fact that "the defendant did not visit the investigator, thus grossly violating the requirements envisaged by a travel ban."

On February 27, 2012, Pechersky District Court in Kyiv found Lutsenko guilty of committing official crimes and sentenced him to four years in prison, with confiscation of his property.
