An elk has caused a traffic accident in Zhytomyr region on May 2 that killed a serviceman of the National Guard of Ukraine, and left four people injured, including citizens of the United States and Belarus, the press service of the National Police branch in Zhytomyr region reported.

An investigative team has tentatively established that at around 22:00 on May 2, on the Zhytomyr – Mohyliv-Podilsky highway, near the village of Huiva, a driver of an Opel Movano minibus when moving in the direction of Berdychiv hit an elm that suddenly ran out into the road.

As the result of the blow the minibus went into an oncoming traffic lane, where it collided first with a Fiat Linea and then with a Mercedes Sprinter.

As the result of the accident, the driver of Fiat Linea, a 24-year-old serviceman of the National Guard, resident of Romaniv district, died at the scene.

In addition, four people: a driver of the Opel Movano, 31-year-old resident of Zhytomyr; a driver of the Mercedes Sprinter, 55-year-old citizen of Belarus, as well as two of his passengers – U.S. citizens aged 47 and 52 were taken to hospitals.

An inquiry into the event has been launched.
