You're reading: EU Commissioner says Ukraine should continue prosecution reform, fight against corruption

Ukraine should not lose its chance to carry out effective prosecution reform and the fight against corruption, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova has said.

“I want to emphasize that it is very important to continue this work, because Ukraine won’t have another chance to improve the situation in these areas,” she said at a briefing in Kyiv.

Jourova said that considerable progress had been made in the development of appropriate legislation and the establishment of government agencies, however legislative changes are not enough in these fields, “even if they are verified by the Venice Commission.”

“Much depends on how efficient observance and implementation of this legislation is,” the commissioner said.

She also believes that broad understanding of the need for reforms in the fight against corruption in civil society is important.

“I’m coming home with a very good feeling as for reforms. At most meetings, I felt that my interlocutors are highly motivated in carrying out reforms. I believe the country is moving in the right direction,” Jourova said.
