You're reading: EU urges Russia, Ukraine to avoid escalation of conflict

The European Union (EU) continues to be unwavering in their support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and said that any actions that could lead to a further escalation of the conflict must be avoided by all sides.

According to a statement of the European Union External Action, High Representative and Vice-President Federica Mogherini spoke with Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin about the escalation in tensions between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.

“The European Union condemns and does not recognise the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by the Russian Federation. We continue to be unwavering in our support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” Mogherini said.

She said that a peaceful resolution of the conflict is the only possible solution.

“This includes eastern Ukraine, where we urge all parties to fully engage in the complete implementation of the Minsk agreements.”

“The European Union and its Member States will continuously assess the situation, including at the level of the Political and Security Committee next Wednesday,” Mogherini said.

Klimkin also informed about the phone call with Mogherini.

“Had a good chat by phone with FedericaMog (Federica Mogherini) yesterday. Full commitment to the EU non-recognition for Crimea.
