Brussels, August 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek has expressed his concern about the arrest of former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko and called on Ukraine to uphold the principles and common values that define relations between Kyiv and Brussels.

"The context and conditions [of the arrest] raise concerns about the politically motivated nature of this decision, and about the application of the rule of law in Ukraine. I have recently expressed my concern to Ukraine’s leaders about the apparent selectivity in opening criminal proceedings against Tymoshenko and other former ministers of previous government," reads the statement.

In his statement, Buzek also urged Ukraine "to uphold the principles and common values that define our relationship and that form the core of the Eastern partnership."

Yulia Tymoshenko was arrested today for disobeying court procedures.

One of her assistants told a Kyiv Post reporter she was taken to the Lukyanivska pre-trial detention center in Kyiv.

At the same time the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine has no information about the place of Tymoshenko imprisonment, according to the Interfax reports.

"The Prosecutor General’s Office does not know where she was taken to," the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Kyiv’s police said that they did not know about Tymoshneko’s place of detention as this issue is outside their competence.

The press service of the Security Service of Ukraine also said that they did not know where Tymoshenko was being held.

A brawl erupted outside the courtroom as Tymoshenko supporters attempted to block police from leaving the court with the arrested Tymoshenko.
