You're reading: Femen activists hold event ‘No Papa any more!’ in Paris

Activists of the Femen France movement have held an event at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris devoted to the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

“Sex extremists Femen France played a funeral march for the Pope on bells at Notre Dame de Paris Catholic Cathedral. There was a fight between the women and Pope supporters and guards. The museum’s leadership decided to switch off the lights so as not to allow journalists to see what was going on,” reads a posting on the official Web site of the movement.

As the French mass media reported, eight activists entered the cathedral. Removing long coats, the half-naked women started to beat bells with sticks, shouting “There is no Pope anymore!” in English. They had the words “No homophobia!” “Crisis of faith!” and “Goodbye, Benedict!” written on their fronts and backs.

Guards apprehended the women on the street, where the latter continued to chant slogans in support of a proposed French law on same-sex marriages that will allow homosexuals to adopt children.
