You're reading: Finance ministry refuses to blame NBU for hryvnia devaluation

The pace of the hryvnia exchange rate is defined by the influence of many factors, including decisions of all branches of power, and it is wrong to shift blame for it only on the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), Finance Minister of Ukraine Natalie Jaresko has said.

“There is no person who is responsible for the exchange rate. There is no institution that is responsible for the exchange rate. We all form the exchange rate and we all make decisions every day that influence on the exchange rate,” she said at a meeting of the parliamentary committee for economic policy asked who is responsible for the hryvnia devaluation – the NBU or the government.

“The exchange rate is not fixed, and we should give up expectations that it would be the same all the time,” she said.

She said that now the delay with the new tranche from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) presses on the exchange rate.

She also said that peak budget payments in December also affected the pace of the national currency. She said that at present she is working with budget managers to avoid these peaks in the future.

“Everyone understood that you are protecting Gontareva [NBU Governor Valeriya Gontareva],” Head of the parliamentary committee Andriy Ivanchuk said.
