You're reading: Foreign ministers of European states declare Crimean referendum illegitimate

The Foreign chiefs of the Northern European Countries, Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and Visegrad Group (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary) considered the decision of Crimea's Supreme Council to hold a referendum on Crimea joining the Russian Federation to be contrary to the Ukrainian Constitution and therefore illegal. 

“The ministers condemn Russia’s unprovoked violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as illegal referendum regarding Crimea’s joining Russia,” reads a joint report of the ministers posted on Friday.

The day before the Supreme Council of Crimea approved a resolution that Crimea would become a part of Russia. The deputies set a referendum on the future status of the peninsula for March 16.
