The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine has confirmed that a Ukrainian national was on board a ship that was attacked by Nigerian pirates. The Ukrainian was not injured.

"According to updated information from the Embassy of Ukraine in Nigeria, the crew of the ship consisted of one Ukrainian national, six Russians, and seven citizens of the Philippines," the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, Oleksandr Dykusarov, told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, the pirates took hostage two Russians and one Philippine citizen, but the Ukrainian national was left unharmed.

Ukrainian diplomats are continuing to monitor the situation.

Dykusarov said the attack was made on Feb. 28. The ship is owner by a Dutch company.

The International Maritime Bureau has reported that armed Nigerian pirates robbed a cargo ship anchored at the Port Harcourt and captured at least two of its crewmembers.

Russian Ambassador to Nigeria Alexander Polyakov confirmed that the pirates took hostage two Russian sailors.

One of the crewmembers was injured in the attack and another is missing, Western media reported.
