A former officer of the State Guard Department, Major Mykola Melnychenko, has arrived at the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO).

He told reporters near the building of the main investigative department on Wednesday that he was summoned at 1100.

One hour earlier, second Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma (1994-2004) arrived at the PGO’s main investigative department for questioning on suspicion of being involved in the case of the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze.

Gongadze disappeared in Kyiv on September 16, 2000. A decapitated body, which experts believe was that of the journalist, was found in a forest near Kyiv in November the same year. On November 28, 2000, Ukrainian Socialist Party leader Oleksandr Moroz published a transcript of several tape recordings pointing to the involvement of then Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma and other officials in a number of high-profile crimes, including the Gongadze murder. The tape recordings were allegedly made by former officer of the State Department of Guard Mykola Melnychenko. The authenticity of these recording has not been proved.
