Brussels – European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fuele has confirmed that he will visit Ukraine on Feb. 7-8.

He told about his upcoming visit at the plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on Thursday, when asked to comment on the situation with Ukraine’s former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko and former interior minister Yuriy Lutsenko.

“I am going to Ukraine soon, on Feb. 7 and 8, and this issue (the politically-motivated prosecution) will be on my agenda,” he said.

Fuele recalled the conclusions on Ukraine, which the EU Council adopted in December.

In his words, based on the proposals by EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and Fuele, the EU member states made it very clear that the association agreement can be signed during the Vilnius summit only if there is progress on three issues. And one of them is the demand that the Ukrainian authorities should address the issue of politically motivated prosecution, the European Commissioner said.
