Germany has offered to extend a mandate of the OSCE monitoring mission working in the south-east of Ukraine, Germany's Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said.

In an interview with media in regard to the Germany’s Chairmanship of OSCE, he said that the events, which have been happening in Ukraine since 2014, demonstrated how OSCE is needed for security in Europe.

According to the German minister, despite all failures, without a monitoring mission it would be impossible to achieve such progress in the military de-escalation and arms withdrawal as it happened in reality.

For the monitors to continue to do their important job we now need to promptly decide on extension of the mandate and on mission’s budget, Steinmeier said.

He has said that the powers of the mission it had by today justified itself since it ensured the mission the freedom of its actions, which it needed to fulfill its tasks.
