Vilnius – Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite has said that the European Union told Ukraine that the situation around Ukrainian former Premier Yulia Tymoshenko should be settled, but didn't explain how to do so.

“We have always said that the Tymoshenko issue had to be resolved, but we didn’t say how it should be done. The Ukrainians should decide,” she told journalists in an interview in Vilnius on Tuesday.

Asked whether the EU has a backup plan if the Association Agreement with Ukraine isn’t signed in Vilnius, Grybauskaite said: “I don’t think that we need any plans: it’s the Ukrainians who will have to make plans if their duties aren’t fulfilled.”

However, she also said that she doesn’t exclude the possibility of signing the agreement after the summit in Vilnius.

“Sooner or later, we’ll sign [the agreement]. Will it happen in Vilnius? That will be decided only at the last moment,” the Lithuanian president said.

Grybauskaite said that she was sure that the Association Agreement was a chance for Ukraine to develop and become a more democratic state.
